I don’t want to sound like an old geezer fondly remembering the days of yester-year, but it’s funny to think about how much Peoria has changed since I’ve moved here – and that was only 9 years ago!!
When we moved here from Scottsdale in 1998, we were at the very edge of the city; there was very little development nearby. (Our subdivision was one of the first in a long series of new homes..) The Circle K on the corner of 83rd and Union Hills (now the center of town) opened its doors about 6 months AFTER we moved in.

In 2000, when our baby was having a tough time getting to sleep, we used to put him in the car and take a leisurely drive up 99th Avenue – there weren’t any developments or streetlights between Beardsley and the Carefree Highway! And during those drives, there was something about this mountain that always caught my eye. It’s small, but has a majestic feel to it, and juts right out of the desert floor – just north of Jomax about a quarter mile west of 99th Ave.
Well, here comes development.

Looks like Pulte is going to build a couple hundred homes, and some lucky homeowners are going to own fantastic lots backing against this mountain. I just hope they appreciate it.

Chris,
I know how you feel. We were driving in that area the other day and couldn’t believe all the building out there. We, for years, when telling people where we live have said there wasn’t much beyond us and that we live on the edge of the desert. Now we can’t really say that anymore.
We to moved out here to the edge of civilization just about the same time as you and have been a little sad to see some of the desert disappearing. The worst area for us being the little desert along 95th behind Parkridge. We used to go bike riding with our kids there and we fondly remember the wild Saguaro cacti that we were so excited to be living so close to. They are all gone now and I can’t help but be a little sad about the loss.
Although, I do love and use all the new shopping up on Happy Valley Rd. So development isn’t all bad just quicker than we would like to see it in some places.
