In yet another indication that our market slow-down is temporary (a builder announced plans to start construction on a 444 unit condo complex in Surprise a couple of days ago), Desert Communities, Inc. won the bidding on a 1,010 acre parcel of state land between Apache Junction and Florence, in the Lost Dutchman Heights area of Superstition Vistas. It sounds like this is the first step towards building a master planned community in the far Southeast Valley, similar to Verrado in Buckeye and Desert Ridge in North Phoenix. They are expecting about 1 million people to live there when the entire project is completed!

Actually, I should correct myself and note that there is a divided two-lane highway on each side of the road, for a total of four lanes. However, that will definately not suffice for traffic if more housing is planned for the area!
I was waiting to see when East of Apache Junction would start gaining more interest. It’s definately beautiful out there with the Superstition Mountains. I head out there every Feb/March for the annual Renaissance Festival and have seen that area grow and grow over the past 18 years. Hopefully they will widen the highway out there if they are going to build more housing, as it’s a two-lane right. At least during the Renaissance Faire when there are 12,000-18,000 people heading out there every weekend, that highway is jam-packed!
