I used to work at the corner of 7th and camelback & my daughter also went to daycare on 7th & Highland & I will never forget the traffic problems that these lanes created. I probably hate waiting in traffic more than most people but I still think these lanes are unsafe & witnessed approximately between 1-3 accidents EVERY single day. One accident occurred right on the other side of the street & a car went over the curb & smashed through the wall of the business there & I realized that the only thing protecting me was 10 feet of parking lot & about 1/4 inch of glass & I ended up quitting. The problem is that people that don't travel these roads every day do not know how or when to use them correctly. Also each person may have a slightly different time on their watch so there may already be cars in the suicide lane at the time it switches to a north or southbound lane causing head on collisions. Another accident I witnessed was outside my daughters' aycare, it was right after the switch to northbound, someone used the suicide lane to pick up there child & it caused a 4 car pileup just a few feet away from where my child was playing. I understand the need to alleviate traffic congestion but perhaps they could post large signs informing the public of the potential danger before they decide to travel on these roads other than just the little red signs on traffic lights they have now.

@Judy - MOST (but not all) of the side streets have "No Left Turn During Rush Hour" signs posted. But a few of the side streets don't, which causes a lot of confusion. Drivers think it must be ok to turn left, otherwise it would have a sign posted just like the rest of the streets. This causes a lot of the backups. If the City signed the entire route consistently I bet there would be less confusion/backups.

I can't speak for retiring early, but working from home definitely helps!

I have traveled the Phoenix city streets for years and I must admit that when the reversible traffic lanes first "came into being", I was as confused as everyone else. However, traveling up and down 7th street did eventually become less of a nightmare once people "got the hang" of it. On more than one occasion, however, I did still see people trying to make left-hand turns in areas where they shouldn't have - result - big traffic back-up in that reversible lane!!! Final analysis - retire early and don't worry about fighting rush hour traffic!!

We called them "suicide lanes" in Tucson and then they got rid of all of them. I hate them.
